Established in 1995, by Warwick and Jenny Hawker, Pisa Range Estate is a pioneer grape grower of the Pisa district, north of Cromwell.
Pisa Range Estate Vineyard covers some thirty-three hectares of flat and terraced land. This area which sits on the 45th parallel bordered by Lake Dunstan on one side and the rugged Pisa Range on the other is proving to be a prime pinot noir growing site in the region. For 3 years from 1998 the grapes from this estate made up the Quartz Reef Pinot Noir before winemaker Rudi Bauer's own vineyard fruit came on-stream. Since 2000 Pisa Range Estate has produced its own wine, made under contract by Rudi Bauer at Quartz Reef winery.
Over the last decade the combination of high growing degree days and Waenga sandy loam soils has consistently produced fine pinot noir under the ‘Black Poplar Block’ label - with the label now rated as a New Zealand ‘Classic’ pinot noir, and since 2000 the wine has consistently received many local and international awards. The guiding principle in the management of the land - and in the winery - is 'minimal intervention. The aim is for the wines to express their 'sense of place'.
Pisa Range Estate is an Accredited Member of Sustainable Winegrowing NZ (since 2002) and a Member of the Biodynamic Association of New Zealand.
